X Rays

At Langley Dental Practice as part of your dental treatment dental x rays are often required. At your first examination we will take x rays to help us reach a diagnosis and formulate a treatment plan.

We take different types of x rays to help us reach our diagnosis. Intraoral x rays are taken in your mouth and are of two types - bitewing x rays and periapical x rays.

Bitewing x rays look in between the posterior teeth and are useful at detecting hidden decay in between teeth that may have been missed on a visual examination. These x rays are taken at right angles to the outside surfaces of the teeth and therefore give a very accurate view of the height of bone support to the teeth which helps to give an indication of the periodontal (gum) health around the teeth in question.

A periapical x ray takes a picture of the whole length of the tooth from the tip of the crown to the apex of the root. This allows us to look at the whole length of the tooth and get a view of the surrounding structures that the tooth is sitting and their condition. We always take periapical x rays when doing root canal therapy on teeth.

At Langley Dental Practice we also have the ability to take extra oral dental panoramic x rays which give a view of the whole mouth. These x rays are very useful in helping diagnoses where there are multiple dental problems such as broken teeth or roots and also when patients are having problems with wisdom teeth.

We follow the guidance "Selection Criteria for Dental Radiography" from the Faculty of General Dental Practice at the Royal College of Surgeons of England when we consider the use and frequency of dental x rays.

At Langley Dental Practice all our x rays are digital, which means that they are uploaded straight on to our computer almost instantly after they are taken. Digital x rays also mean a lower dose of x rays for patients, because we put patient safety at the forefront of everything that we do.
